This year’s Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman for their work on mRNA vaccines, which were instrumental in curtailing the spread of COVID-19
Karikó, a Hungarian-born professor at Sagan’s University in Hungary and an adjunct professor at the University of Pennsylvania, and Weissman, who performed his prizewinning research together
Their research led to the development of mRNA vaccines against COVID-19, which have been widely used in high-income countries since 2021
