Tips for Traveling in the Summer of 2023

Summer is here, and with it comes the official return of traveling – along with all the high prices and headaches that make it unbearable.

“Travel is chaotic this summer,” said Sasha Gainullin, CEO of the travel insurance company battleface. “And travelers are looking for ways to handle the chaos.”

Luckily, there are some new expert summer travel survival strategies that can help you deal with it.

For example, Battleface has partnered with the travel claims management company AirHelp to create a travel insurance plan specifically for air travelers. This plan compensates you for every flight delay, and if your airline is late for three hours or more, they cancel or change your flight within a week of your departure,  AirPayout sends you $110. That’s above and beyond any compensation provided by your airline.

Travel insurance companies can cover a lot of things. But this summer’s biggest problems – crowds, delays, and high prices – will require more than just a good policy to deal with. I have some professional advice to handle these issues. And in a moment, I’ll give you a tip that no other travel columnist dares to suggest.

How to Handle Summer Crowds?

You can avoid the crowd by choosing the opposite destination. Consider a place on Florida’s Northwest Gulf Coast, like Destin, Fort Walton Beach, or Panama City, where record-breaking tourism occurred during the pandemic. It has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world with white sand and emerald waters. But it’s also within driving distance of big cities like Nashville and Atlanta, so when the pandemic ended, people wanted to go further – and the crowds diminished.

To avoid the crowd, my favorite expert strategy is Smart Timing. Even during the busiest days of peak season, you can find moments of peace. Try heading to the hotel’s breakfast buffet at 6:30 AM, and you’ll encounter a cheerful staff eager to help you. By 10 AM, not so much.

Moreover, that crowded beach becomes practically empty at sunrise, which is one of the best times for long walks.

What Can You Do About Delays?

Summer delays are common, but that doesn’t mean it has to be your reality.

If you haven’t booked your summer vacation yet (you’re a bit late, by the way), there are a few things you can do to make your trip less delay-prone.

First, you can easily find out if your desired flight is experiencing delays. Some online travel agencies display that information right next to the flight. If they don’t, you can check the flight number on flight-tracking websites like FlightAware, which shows average delays. Compare it to the historical actual departure and arrival times, as well as the flight’s duration displayed for that day. You’ll find it’s often better to opt for the flight with the least delays.

Try to hit the road as early as possible in the morning, and you’ll be at your destination well ahead of the busy times. If you’re not sure, you can always consult a reputable travel advisor. I have a free guide on my consumer advocacy site,, on how to find the best travel advisor.

Additionally, seek maximum flexibility not only for flights but also for hotels and tourism.Tips for Traveling Smart in the Summer of 2023.

Choose Your Destination Wisely

Accessible travel has become a major industry, and the internet is filled with resources that can educate you about the best travel destinations for people with disabilities. For example, places like Disney World, Bollywood, and Morgan’s Wonderland are renowned for their wheelchair-friendly rides, attractions, shows, parking spaces, restrooms, and disability services.
