More than 2,100 killed by earthquake in Morocco

The strongest-ever earthquake in Morocco has killed at least 2,122 people and injured over 2,421, according to the latest official figures.

After that earthquake, people who survived in the Atlas Mountains area have had to spend the nights under the open sky.

Locals are still searching for survivors in the mountainous terrain where houses were constructed with mud, stone, and wood.

The minarets of mosques crumbled in the earthquake that struck the historic city of Marrakech last Friday night, causing extensive damage.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the 6.8 magnitude earthquake was located approximately 72 kilometers southwest of Marrakech.

Rescue workers in the village of Amizmiz, near the epicenter, are working with empty hands to clear the debris. The narrow roads in the area have become impassable due to the destruction caused by the collapsed buildings.
