Las Vegas High School Students Arrested for Murder Charges
Las Vegas, NV – Eight high school students in Las Vegas, ranging in age from 13 to 17, have been arrested on suspicion of murder in the fatal beating of a classmate, authorities announced at a news conference Tuesday.
Eight Las Vegas High School Students Arrested for Beating Classmate to Death
Las Vegas Police Homicide Lt. Jason Johansson said investigators are still working to identify two other students they believe were involved in the November 1 fight, which he said was over a pair of wireless headphones and a vape pen.
The local FBI office assisted in the arrests of the eight students on Tuesday morning, Johansson said. He said the two outstanding students will also be charged with murder.
Authorities were unable to identify the students because they were minors. Johansson said he and his team are working with the local district attorney’s office to determine whether they will be charged as adults.
The 17-year-old victim, Jonathan Lewis Jr., was hospitalized with severe “head injuries” and other injuries from the fight until his death about a week later. The Las Vegas coroner’s office ruled the beating a homicide.
Johansson said the fight was pre-arranged after the victim’s friend’s headphones and vape pen were stolen.
Johansson said investigators believe the victim was not originally supposed to be involved in the fight but went to a nearby alley with his friend, where the fight was supposed to take place after classes ended for the day at Rancho High School in east Las Vegas.

After his death, the victim’s father, Jonathan Lewis Sr., said his son was attacked while “standing up for one of his little friends,” the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.
In the alley, 10 students “immediately jumped him, pulled him to the ground, and began kicking, punching, and stomping on him,” Johansson said.
After the fight, he said, a “citizen” in the area saw the victim badly beaten and unconscious in the alley and took him back to campus, where school staff called 911.
The arrests come as a shock to the community and have raised concerns about violence in Las Vegas schools.
Johansson said the investigation is ongoing and that authorities are still trying to determine the motive for the attack.
The eight students are scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
